Aims and objectives
This unit is designed to enable students to develop an understanding of the strategy planning and strategic management process, from identifying/defining the organisation’s strategic purpose in a mission statement, to clarifying the strategic plan, through strategy formulation and implementation, and finally evaluation of the success of strategies and tactics to achieve organisational objectives. Students will have the opportunity to consider theories which inform and techniques and tools which are used in the practice of strategic management.
Focus will be particularly on the positioning and resource-based view of the firm as useful approaches to strategic management as they permit consideration of how the organisation can identify and develop its own resources (e.g. people, culture, processes) and its interaction with the external environment (e.g. competitors, markets, customers) to create sustained competitive advantage and organisational sustainability.

- Identify and critically discuss the approaches to or schools of strategic management, particularly considering the positioning school and the resource-based view of the firm
- Apply different strategic management theories and concepts to case studies to understand the usefulness of theories and concepts to facilitate understanding and clarification of important variables in the strategic management process
- Identify and utilise strategic management tools and techniques to develop appropriate organisational strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of those strategies
- Identify generic business strategies and consider appropriate alignment of functional strategies to enable achievement of organisational objectives, particularly with regard to the HR function
- Develop a business case linking functional level strategies and specific practices to the business strategy of the organisation
- Understand the necessity of addressing financial and people resourcing issues as part of the strategic planning and management process
