Successful completion of either HDCOM122 or HDFTV112 or equivalent.  This unit is available to students who have completed at least 150 credit points of their course.

Aims and objectives

This unit aims to develop and employ photographic skills for recording and presenting outcomes in various fields of professional design practice. This unit will build on and extend basic photographic knowledge and introduce the principles of studio lighting. Students will have the opportunity to develop their digital photographic practice and output.
After successfully completing this unit, you should be able to:
1. Use camera controls creatively to resolve design assignments
2. Analyse light effectively to create different moods
3. Compare lighting for 2 or 3 dimensional objects using studio set ups
4. Apply photographic technique to professional presentations in their design discipline
5. Employ digital photographic images and techniques for further professional application
6. Determine art direction skills to resolve design problems

Teaching methods

This unit will be a combination of lectures, weekly face-to-face tutorials with practical demonstrations and online participation and consultation. Projects will be conducted within a studio-based learning environment on a work-in-progress basis. Students will be required to participate in and contribute to the weekly sessions involving individual consultations, tutorial discussions and research activities.

• Advanced camera controls
• Lighting comparison location/studio
• Studio lighting and its effect on the photograph
• Art directing skills
• Pre and post digital production techniques
