Aims and objectives
At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Recognise the different components of the structure of the Italian language
- Comprehend, communicate and apply grammatical rules in a basic written and oral form
- Manage basic Italian conversation
- Adapt to cultural settings and show cultural sensitivity
- Apply skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking of basic Italian

- Italian alphabet, spelling and phonetics
- Greetings
- Nouns & adjectives: gender and number & agreement rules
- Definite and indefinite articles
- Verbs: essere, avere, modal verbs and the 3 conjugations; negative form
- Verbal moods & tenses: present indicative, passato prossimo indicative
- Possessive and demonstrative adjectives and pronouns
- Direct object pronouns
- Prepositions: semplici and articolate
