Aims and objectives

At the conclusion of this unit students will be able to:
  • Describe the elements of futures thinking
  • Undertake a trend analysis on a relevant topic
  • Apply creative and innovative thinking to selected contemporary issues
  • Prepare probable scenarios around a selected issue
  • Work as a team to develop new ideas and scenarios

Assessment

Individual assignment (50%), Participation (20%), Team project (30%)

Content

  • The nature of our understanding of time, how different timeframes are socially constructed and how both of these impacts on how the future is considered
  • Demonstrate a number of tools and techniques that individual s can use to promote creative and innovative thinking
  • Show the ways that trends can be analysed and how this aids making forecasts
  • Demonstrate the use of cross-impact analysis as an aid to decision-making
  • An explanation and demonstration of scenario thinking and how it is used to futures thinking
