Aims and objectives

This unit of study aims to introduce students to the the history of 20th Century graphic design through which the
contextualise the social, psychological, cultural, historical and commercial factors which underpin all graphic design
theory and practice. Through information gathering and research students will develop a knowledge of the cultural
history and social theory which informs current thoughts and debates across the field of graphic design. Central to this
unit is the investigation of technology alongside the development of graphic design in order to understand the interrelationship
between graphic design and technology.
 
On successful completion of this unit a learner will be able to:
1. Gather information through in-depth research activities
2. Understand influences on art and design activities and outcomes through the interpretation and analysis of
information
3. Assess, interpret and evaluate information
4. Develop and present an argument based on current literature
5. Evaluate and present conclusions.
 
This unit will be taught at the Prahran campus.

Teaching methods

36 hours of structured learning, including lectures, tutorials and assessments. In addition, the units require
approximately 72 hours of self-study, projects, assignments and skills development.

Content

This unit provides an introduction to 20th Century graphic design history, focusing on a range of key designers,
innovations and movements such as Modernism, International Modernism, and Post-Modernism. It explores aspects of
the historical development of design as a creative, cultural and professional practice, while referencing the visual,
material and spatial languages of design. The economic and cultural role of design is explored, together with the
interface of design with the arts, and more significantly with modern technology, materials, production and
consumerism. A contemporary lens will be used to explore the relevance of the past to the present.

A range of topics will be covered, including: Modernism/post-modernism/contemporary design; Design typologies;
Design heroes; Innovation in design; Internationalism/cultural pluralism; Design, ideas and cultural production; Design
as political and social action; Design, technology and change; Theories and principles of design; Evolution of design as
a professional practice, Popular culture /high culture.
