Aims and objectives

The aim of this unit of study is to provide the skills and knowledge required to establish and manage the payroll functions for a small business enterprise.

After successfully completing this unit, you should be able to:
  • Understand the function of payroll within an organisation
  • Payroll/HR MIS software
  • Procedures required for effective payroll management
  • Understand and apply the legislative requirements relevant to payroll management
  • Understand and interpret industrial awards
  • Prepare a variety of payroll data in accordance with industrial awards and statutory and voluntary deductions
  • Understand the control procedures required to manage a payroll
  • Understand and implement payroll record administration

Teaching methods

This unit will be taught in a variety of modes including face to face, online and blended modes. Delivery of this unit may be through a mixture of tutorials, laboratories and online.

Content

  • The function of payroll within an organisation (HR function, Accounting function, Administrative function)
  • Payroll/HR MIS software including CHRIS 21, SAP, PeopleSoft, MYOB
  • Procedures required for effective payroll management (security, control and organisational requirements)
  • Legislative requirements (Fair Work Australia, ATO legislation, Superannuation Guarantee Act, WorkCover, EEO, Privacy Laws)
  • Understanding and interpreting industrial awards
  • Preparing payroll data, calculating pay in accordance with industrial awards, statutory and voluntary deductions whilst adhering to required time lines
  • Authorising the payment of wages and salaries (reconciliation of payroll data, dealing with payroll related enquiries in accordance with organisational and legislative requirements)
  • Payroll record administration (including the payment of liabilities to government and non- government creditors and calculation of Payment Summaries)
