Aims and objectives

To meet the mathematical and statistical needs of aviation students who are undertaking either the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation (Management) degree and may also be undertaking a concurrent Bachelor of Commerce degree.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to;
  • solve basic mathematics of calculus, vectors and complex numbers, 
  • solve basic statistical problems, financial mathematics and data analysis and apply these in an aviation and commerce context.

Teaching methods

Classroom based lectures & tutorials with online Blackboard support.
Lectures - 48 hours, Tutorials - 12 hours. 

Assessment

Examination (worth 60-70%), 
Class Tests/Assignments (worth 30-40%).

Content

Vectors
Addition, subtraction and scalar products, relative velocity, applications to ground speed, wind speed, airspeed and heading, resolution of forces

Calculus
Limits, differentiation, anti-differentiation, definite integration, separable differential equations

Complex numbers
Operations, conjugates, moduli, polar form, de Moivre’s theorem, exponential functions.

Business and Aviation Statistics
Data summary, analysis and presentation, basic probability, the normal distribution, estimation and testing hypotheses, correlation and regression.

Financial Mathematics
Simple and compound interest, nominal and effective rates, present values, future values, annuities, mortgages, net present value, internal rate of return.

Student notes will be available from the Swinburne bookshop and/or via Blackboard.
A specialist calculator will be required.
