Japanese Language Major - 2010
Specialisation at Hawthorn
Description
Japan is a unique country that is responsible for many of the technological advancements and iconic popular culture seen throughout the world today. It is home to numerous successful international businesses and there is a growing demand for those who are bi-lingual in Japanese and English, both within Japan and abroad. The study of international business with Japanese can help students open up a myriad of opportunities to work within, or in association with, a Japanese organisation.
The Japanese Language Major is part of a vocationally oriented double degree designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to tackle business in, or associated with, Japan. It is designed to assist in the intellectual, social and personal development of the student as preparation for entrance to a range of specialist and generalist business professions.
This Major is undertaken by students enrolled in either the Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) or Bachelor of Commerce (International Business) / Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) programs commencing from 2010.
Career opportunities
Graduates of the double degrees enjoy opportunities wherever Japanese is spoken, with particular advantages in organisations where there are either joint country business ventures or offices located in Japan. In order to teach Japanese, graduates must have completed the Stage 3 units of study in the Advanced Japanese stream. Students with studies in International Business can find rewarding work in an array of institutions and firms engaged in aspects of international business.
Structure
The Japanese Language Major is made up of 12 (150 credit points) and will include all the requisite units and equip students with a thorough understanding of the subject matter.
The language units are offered as a Beginners Stream with no prerequisite language requirement, or as an Advanced Stream for students who have completed VCE Japanese or equivalent.
