University to Postgraduate

This site is tailored to the needs of Australian citizens and permanent residents that have completed an undergraduate degree in last ten (10) years; and may be entitled to credit transfer and exemptions.

International students should visit the International website for more information on pathways.

Making the most of what you have learnt

More and more graduates are returning to complete their postgraduate qualifications sooner rather than later, as they may be entitled to exemptions based on their undergraduate studies. As an intersectoral university, Swinburne makes the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies easier than ever.

The pathways program ensures that students gain the maximum benefit from their previous studies. Whether students come from Swnburne or another institute, credit transfer pathways are in place to help students enter the right postgraduate course at the appropriate level.

Postgraduate Pathways Flowchart

What are the minimum requirements?

Students who complete a postgraduate program where credit transfer or an exemption is granted will normally be required to complete a minimum of their course at Swinburne. The minimum requirements are as follows:

Graduate Certificate Graduate Diploma Master

A minimum of two subjects (25 credit points) must be completed.

A minimum of four subjects (50 credit points) must be completed.

A minimum of eight subjects (100 credit points*) must be completed. A maximum of eight subjects (100 credit points) advanced standing is allowed.

* Some exceptions may apply

Generally students must obtain a minimum of a credit average in their final year of undergraduate study and pass all units of study. Students that are interested in applying for exemptions based upon work history will need to discuss this at the time of application and enrolment.

Time Limit

Exemptions are not normally granted for subjects passed more than ten (10) years prior to the date of a student's admission to their current course.

Exemptions based on completed Undergraduate qualifications

Not all postgraduate programs offer credit transfer and exemptions based on undergraduate studies. Where possible, exemptions granted will be matched against specific subjects, to ensure that prior studies are not duplicated.

The published information will indicate students' eligibility for credit transfer and exemptions; achieving the minimum entry requirement to a postgraduate program does not guarantee selection.
