Navigating the transition to university: advice for students and parents

Students of 2008 are well into their first semester of study and have settled into university life, taking with them the advice of Swinburne psychology lecturer, Dr Naomi Crafti, who encouraged students to form workgroups to ease the transition from high school to tertiary study.

"There are many opportunities to meet other students in the same position at the orientation program or during the first few weeks of classes," said Crafti.

Todd Kilby is currently undertaking his first semester of a Bachelor of Circus Arts at Swinburne and said that moving from a regional town to Melbourne in 2008 was definitely made easier by the support of new friends he made at Swinburne.

"It makes it easier having lots of mates here, all of whom I met in Melbourne both at Swinburne Residential College and at NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts). The people I train with have all become great mates of mine and we help each other out throughout training".

Crafti admitted that the transition from high school to university "can be a stressful time for everybody, but parents should remember that this isn't the first time their child has gone through a transition and it’s about gradually letting go".

"Now parents can relax and be proud as they must have done a good job for their child to get this far, but it is important that students make their own mistakes in order to learn."
