New health courses at Swinburne

In response to a new health training package, Swinburne TAFE is expanding its delivery in the health sector with the introduction of three new health courses.

"The health sector is going through rapid changes in terms of the way the workforce is designed and the basic qualifications required by workers", said Madelyn Lettieri, department manager of Health Recreation and Human Services at Swinburne.

From April 2008, Swinburne will offer comprehensive health courses ranging from six months to two years in population health, allied health assistance and health service assistance.

The Diploma of Population Health will qualify students to find employment in areas such as community development, indigenous health, environmental health and project management.

Students who have completed a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance can work as assistants to physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists.

Certificate III in Health Services Assistance graduates can work in the health and community services industry as domestic service attendants and orderlies.

Individual mentoring will be a big part of the courses offered at Swinburne and students will have a teacher assigned to them throughout their training.

"We are also looking at developing pathways for students with non-English speaking backgrounds and giving students a vocational pathway they haven't had before," said Lettieri.

Swinburne offers a range of health courses including the Certificate III in Home and Community Care, Certificate III in Health Service Assistance, Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance, Certificate IV in Community Services, Certificate IV in Aged Care Work and the Diploma of Population Health.
