Year 12 Students
Choosing your study path has traditionally been a decision that, once made, can’t be changed. As a Swinburne student, that's not necessarily the case.
Although it is still very important to understand that each step you take after high school will affect your career outcome, Swinburne offers you the flexibility to move from TAFE to university, university to TAFE or across program areas so that you can get all the experience you want from your education.

Choosing the Right Uni or TAFE Course
As a Year 12 student, you're probably getting used to educational institutions telling you why they should be number one.
At Swinburne, we take a different tack:
Shouldn't you be number one?
We don't see education as a popularity contest; we see it as an opportunity for you, the student, to gain knowledge, develop skills and move towards a career that you love.
Swinburne Courses
Swinburne is a dual-sector institution, meaning that it offers both higher education and TAFE courses.
The Course Guide is a great place to begin your search for the subject that suits you:
You can also search through our online course database or read through our study areas to get a broader overview:
Applications
The How to Apply section provides you with a step-by-step guide to applying for Swinburne courses through VTAC.
Scholarships
You have the opportunity to apply for a number of scholarships and may be eligible to receive more than one as long as you meet the criteria for each.
There are scholarships for both TAFE and university students – make sure you check the application closing dates so you don’t miss out.
Fees
There are two types of university places available to students: Full Fee Paying (FFP) and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).
Full Fee Paying students must pay their fees upfront, however FEE-HELP (a loan from the government) is available.
Commonwealth Supported Places allow students to defer payment of tuition fees until they secure work in a job that earns over a certain threshold.
TAFE to University Pathways
Swinburne has one of the highest rates of TAFE graduates going into degree programs.
The reason why TAFE graduates are sought after for university courses is because they have demonstrated their abilities through their TAFE studies and are committed to enhancing their learning at the degree level.

Practical Experiences at Swinburne
Swinburne allows students to put their academic knowledge into action through relevant (and usually paid) work experience, combining learning in the classroom with learning on the job.
The most popular of these out-of-classroom education programs is Industry-Based Learning (IBL). Since Swinburne became a pioneer of the program more than 45 years ago, IBL has become a drawcard for students seeking industry-awareness and a competitive edge in the interview room.
