Living Expenses

How much will living in Melbourne cost?

Your living expenses in Melbourne will depend on your choice of accommodation and course.

Swinburne offers a range of services – from advice on Centrelink benefits to assistance finding suitable employment – that will help you along the way.

Books and Equipment Costs

Books and equipment costs vary for each course, but you will probably require textbooks – which can be bought second-hand or accessed in the library – and you may need to buy materials such as art supplies or a computer.

Financial Advice

There is a financial adviser on each campus to provide support and assistance to you with issues including:

  • Advice and advocacy in matters related to Youth Allowance and government subsidy (Centrelink benefits)
  • Assistance with fees
  • Financial counselling
  • Loans and grants

A range of information handouts including budget sheets and basic tax help is also available.

Working During Uni

  • Part-time work during semester
There is an employment officer on each campus who can help you find part-time work through employment noticeboards and an updated website, an employment register for future job vacancies and provide information on recommended rates of pay and work agreements.
  • Full-time work during holidays
Tertiary courses have long breaks over summer. Consider using this time to gain work experience and earn money to spend during the academic year.
  • Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program
IBL is an optional program available to Australian students, consisting of paid, professional work experience in an area relevant to your course. It is generally taken before the final year of the degree.
