Across Australia and the world, businesses are seeking employees with the knowledge and skills to design, build and maintain innovative products.

Next-generation computers and tablets, smart phones, low-emission cars, biomechanical limbs and industrial robots are just some of the products created by engineers going beyond the conventional. Engineers also play a crucial role in solving the sustainability issues facing the world today.

The career options available to engineering and technology graduates are vast. In engineering alone there are numerous specialisations to choose from, including product design, electrical and electronics, civil, biomedical, mechanical, robotics and mechatronics.

Student success

In 2010, a team of Swinburne students placed second in the International iNexus Robot competition. The team designed and built a robot that could collect rock samples on Mars, replicating a key part of the Mars Manoeuvre spacecraft mission.

Swinburne engineering students also placed second in the Formula SAE competition in 2010, which involved designing, building and racing a formula race car against other university teams.
