Overview

This is a practical, hands-on course that develops knowledge and professional practice for a human resources (HR) career. Students learn workforce planning strategies, HR systems and compliance issues, performance management systems, and organisational culture and change from practising HR professionals.

Course description

The Diploma of Human Resources Management provides students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in HR management processes. As graduates, career paths may include positions such as human resources adviser, human resources and change manager, human resources consultant, human resources manager, and senior human resources officer.
Students may already have technical qualifications but need additional management skills to advance their careers. Alternatively, the qualification provides a guaranteed place in a Swinburne degree program with the equivalent of one year credit. Course structure

Full-time and part-time modes
Six months full-time, 12 months part-time day and evening.
Online mode
The online course of study is suitable for self-directed learners seeking or building a career in human resources management. The Diploma of Human Resources Management can be completed in 12 months online.
Fast-track mode (advanced option)
The fast-track program consists of one full-day workshop every three weeks for six months. Workshops are interactive, highly engaging and are delivered by experienced industry facilitators. Learning must be applied in the workplace via projects, activities and tasks. The fast-track option is only available to people who have an opportunity to apply their learning directly to their current role and who possess a minimum of three years’ experience in the workforce.

Traineeships (workplace training)
Traineeships are workplace-based learning. Traineeships in the Diploma of Human Resource Management are available for people whose workplace will support their learning at work.
Customised programs
The Diploma of Human Resources Management can be customised to enterprise requirements for those working within organisations who wish to further develop management skills and knowledge. Typically, the program begins with a training needs analysis and skills assessment followed by customisation of training and assessment to ensure the program meets the strategic goals of the organisation. Learning interventions may include project-based learning, coaching, mentoring, workshops, self-paced and online learning materials. These programs are designed to provide return on training investment.

To be awarded the Diploma of Human Resources Management students need to complete eight units, including three compulsory core units and five elective units.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however preferred pathways into the course include the following:

Full-time and part-time modes
Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Human Resources (or other relevant qualification/s).

Alternatively, mature applicants who hold the following academic or vocational experience may satisfy the entry requirements:
  • Certificate IV in Human Resources (or other relevant qualification/s) or completed the majority of units required for the Certificate IV in Human Resources (or other relevant qualification/s) or
  • Vocational experience in human resource management, but without formal qualifications
Online mode
Applicants need to be mature aged and working, preferably in a supervisory, human resources or management role, where they can apply the learning at work. Study involves projects, activities and tasks to be completed in the workplace. Applicants must be mature age with at least three years experience in a human resources environment and must be currently working within human resources profession to successfully complete this program. Credit transfer

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of a course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'.
