The Certificate III in Circus Arts offers students completing Year 11 or 12 the opportunity to combine circus training at National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) with secondary studies at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. The course provides elementary training in contemporary circus arts for students who wish to pursue a career as a circus performer.

Course description

The Certificate III in Circus Arts offers students completing Year 11 or 12 the opportunity to combine circus training at National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) with secondary studies at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. The course provides elementary training in contemporary circus arts for students who wish to pursue a career as a circus performer.
The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is a centre of teaching excellence for professional education and training in contemporary circus arts. NICA is incorporated as an independent not-for-profit subsidiary company of Swinburne University of Technology.

Course structure

Students can enter the Certificate III in Circus Arts in either Year 11 or 12. Block timetabling of secondary study will allow for training at NICA. Students undertaking the Certificate III attend classes at NICA for approximately 12 hours per week during school terms. The balance of school time will be spent on academic studies at VCASS.
Students who enter VCASS at Year 11 can undertake the Certificate IV in Circus Arts the following year. This program will be run in conjunction with Year 12 studies at VCASS. Students can only enter this program following completion of the Certificate III in Circus Arts.

NVU20166 Develop elementary movement skills for circus and physical theatre 
NVU20167 Develop elementary applied practices for circus performers
NVU20168 Participate in elementary small group circus or physical theatre performance

The successful completion of Year 10 or equivalent.

NICA encourages applications from young people with backgrounds in areas such as circus, sports acrobatics, trampolining, diving, performing arts, dance, martial arts, gymnastics, competitive sport or physical theatre.

Indigenous students are encouraged to apply.

Entry into NICA is by audition, interview and medical assessment. Applicants who cannot travel to an audition venue may apply by video. Please visit the NICA website to download the application form and audition requirements.
